The novelist Yazoe, abandoned by his wife after a failed marriage, enters his forties still single. To fill the emptiness in his heart, he occasionally spends nights with the prostitute Chieko, all the while dragging along the weight of his past rejection. And he has another reason for shying away from love: a “secret” of his own that he is deeply insecure about and doesn’t want anyone to know.
For Yazoe, it has become a daily ritual to project himself onto the protagonists of his romance novels, using them as a way to explore and question the “possibility of spiritual love.” But one day, after a chance encounter with a college student, Segawa Noriko, at an art gallery—and a mishap on her part—he is drawn into a strange affair that begins to unsettle both his everyday life and his heart.
